You can drive up to Mt John though the road is only open certain days and times. There is a road toll though ($5 or $8) but the views are amazing and if you’re lucky the cafe will be open. The other option is to walk up. The track for this is just prior to the Hot Springs. It is a good hard slog of around 3/4 hr - 1hr up the hill.

This is an awesome wee track that starts by the Tekapo hotpools and leads you all the way to the top of Mt John. There is a nice cafe at the top to reward you for your efforts and to sit down with a cuppa and take in the amazing view of the lakes and mountains.

Superb views and the Astro Café on top is worth stopping at for a coffee.
