Die Basilika wurde von Frati Domenicani gebaut, um die Überreste von San Domenico di Guzman (dem Gründer des Ordens) zu bewaren. Im Inneren werden unbezahlbare Kunstwerke von Guercino, Filippino Lippi e Ludovico Carracci erhalten. In der Kapelle von San Domenico steht die mit Skulpturen verzierte Arche von Michelangelo, Nicola Pisano, Alfonso Lombardi und Niccolò dell’Arca.

An extraordinary feature is certainly the ark that contains the mortal remains of San Domenico, made by famous renaissance sculptors form Tuscany, by Niccolò dell'Arca and completed by the divine Michelangelo. But there is more: the beautiful 16th-century choir; the sepulchers, the cloister.
