Fascinating Greco-Roman city state with walls, columns and an amphitheatre to explore, and a Turkish castle and German WW2 gun emplacements - with fantastic views over the bay. Oh and you can see it from Villa Mia's pool terrace!

It is on a hill 12 km east of Chania, near the ancient city of Aptera. It was built by Hussein Avni pasha after the Cretan Revolution of 1866 to control the region of Apokorona and to support Itzadin fortress in controlling the strategically important bay of Souda.
