The well- preserved remains of this impressive temple stand proudly on a pine-covered hill with far reaching views over the Saronic Gulf. Built in 480BC it celebrates a local diety of pre-Hellenic times. The temple's pediments were originally decorated with splendid Trojan War sculptures, most them were stolen in the 19th century and now decorate Munich's Glyptothek

The most important archaeological site on the island of Aegina, and in fact one of the most important in all of Greece, is the Temple of Aphaea which sits on top of a mountain above the resort town of Agia Marina, with a view of the Aegean Sea and all of Athens and Attika. Very well preserved, easy to walk around quite closely.
The Temple of Aphaia is located within a sanctuary complex dedicated to the mother-goddess Aphaia. It was a favorite of the neoclassical and romantic artists such as J. M. W. Turner. The extant temple of c. 500 BC was built over the remains of an earlier temple of c. 570 BC. The famous marbles from the Late Archaic temple of Aphaia, comprising the sculptural groups of the east and west pediments of the temple, are now on display in the Glyptothek of Munich.
