In der Mitte des an den Hafen grenzenden Platzes steht der Brunnen Fuente de los Leones, 1836 von Giuseppe Gaggini nach einem Vorbild in der Alhambra (Grenada) geschaffen. Er diente den Besatzungen der hier anlegenden Schiffe als Trinkwasserquelle. Die einstige Bedeutung des Platzes als Handelszentrum zeigt sich an zwei Bauwerken: der Aduana General de la República (Zollhaus von 1914) und der Lonja del Comercio (ehemalige Börse, 1908). Auf der Kuppel der Börse thront eine Brozefigur des italienischen Bildhauers Juan de Bologna, die den römischen Gott der Händler, Merkur, darstellt. Nicht weit davon entfernt ist der Terminal Sierra Maestra, Anlegestelle für Kreuzfahrtschiffe.

Description: This Plaza served as a point of water fleets. In addition to the Convent and Church of San Francisco de Asis, they surround the Lonja del Comercio and the customs building. At this Plaza you will find "La Conversación" (The Conversation) - a bronze sculpture. It was made by French artist Etienne and donated by Vittorio Perrotta to the City in September 2012, it represents the need for dialogue in contemporary society.

Cooled by sea breezes, Plaza de San Francisco faces the harbor at the entrance to Old Havana. The carefully-restored buildings impart a well-loved feel to this cobbled square. Plaza de San Francisco is blessed with two famous buildings, the Lonja del Comercio, with its stunning central dome, and the Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis featuring a tower that provides stunning views over Havana and the sea. Reputed to have the best acoustics in all of Cuba, the basilica is used primarily for musical concerts; check in with the attendant for current events. Also in the square, is the Fuente de los Leones, a white marble fountain. Once a freshwater supply to passing ships, this "fountain of the lions," was carved by Giuseppe Gaggini who donated it to the country in 1836
